Could a low-carbohydrate diet improves NAFLD?

The short answer seems to be yes!

NAFLD is now the leading cause of liver disease. In the UK, 1 in 3 people is affected by Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. Obesity and related health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, are major risk factors for NAFLD. With no cure, prevention remains a significant priority while lifestyle intervention is used as a means to tackle those who are already affected.

A group of scientists from Sweden & Finland found that a low-carbohydrate diet showed a rapid & dramatic reduction of liver fat and other cardiometabolic risk factors in a small number of individuals living with the Non-Alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

A carbohydrate-restricted diet is a widely recommended intervention for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The results published in the Journal of Cell Metabolism gives further credibility to such lifestyle interventions as a way of preventing liver disease. Despite the positive results, it is worth noting that the study was conducted amongst ten obese subjects affected by NAFLD.

As every individual is different, we recommend you focus on two key areas to improve your liver health and prevent NAFLD.

1. A balanced diet - Read our blogs on what's a balanced diet for more info. 2. Regular exercise - You do not need to hit the gym every day, a simple 20mins walk every day will be a great start.
